Most travellers need 10–14 days for a well-balanced Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday. This normally allows five to seven days for private game drives and three to five nights beside the Indian Ocean, plus arrival and transfer time.
A 10-day itinerary provides a rewarding introduction to Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro before Zanzibar. With 11–12 days, you can travel more slowly, spend longer in the Serengeti or add another night at the beach. Shorter combinations are possible, but either the safari or Zanzibar can begin to feel rushed.
The price depends on your travel month, group size, safari length, accommodation level, domestic flights and chosen Zanzibar resort.
Our currently displayed sample journeys start from approximately USD 2800 per person for a 10-day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary. Longer family, premium and luxury combinations range from approximately USD 4,000–8,500 per person.
Your quotation clearly shows the included private safari vehicle, guide, park fees, accommodation, meals, domestic flight, transfers and Zanzibar arrangements. International flights, visas, insurance, gratuities and optional island activities are normally quoted separately unless stated otherwise.
June to October is the strongest overall period for combining a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar. Conditions are generally dry, wildlife gathers around permanent water sources and Zanzibar offers warm, sunny beach weather.
December to February is another excellent option, particularly for Serengeti calving-season safaris followed by a beach stay. November can bring short showers but remains suitable for travel and may offer better value. April and May receive the heaviest rainfall, so some beach properties close or offer reduced services during this period.
The easiest way to travel from the Serengeti to Zanzibar is by scheduled domestic flight. Depending on your itinerary, you may fly from a Serengeti airstrip directly to Zanzibar or travel to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport before taking a connecting flight.
Flights from Serengeti airstrips commonly take around two to three hours depending on stops, while Arusha or Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar usually takes approximately one to one-and-a-half hours. For most travellers, it is better to complete the Tanzania safari first and finish in Zanzibar. Safari days often begin early and include active game viewing and overland travel, while the island provides a slower ending with time to swim, rest and enjoy the coast.
Beginning in Zanzibar can still work when international flights, wedding plans or personal dates make it more convenient. However, for first-time visitors, the natural progression from wildlife adventure to beach relaxation usually creates the most satisfying and seamless journey.
The best part of Zanzibar depends on how you want to spend your beach time.
Nungwi and Kendwa are ideal for swimmable beaches, beautiful sunsets, restaurants and a livelier atmosphere. Paje and Jambiani suit travellers wanting long beaches, kitesurfing, local character and relaxed cafés, although the tides are more noticeable. Matemwe and the northeast coast offer quieter boutique resorts and convenient access to Mnemba Atoll snorkelling. Stone Town is best for one or two nights of Swahili history, food and culture rather than a complete beach stay.
