Practical answers for parents planning a safe, comfortable and age-appropriate family safari in Tanzania or Kenya.
There is no universal minimum age for a vehicle-based safari, but children aged six and above usually find it easier to enjoy longer drives and understand wildlife encounters. Younger children can still travel successfully when the itinerary includes a private vehicle, shorter game drives, suitable accommodation and sufficient downtime.
Some lodges and activities—including walking safaris and balloon flights—have their own minimum-age rules. Tell us every child’s age before booking so we can choose suitable routes, rooms and activities.
A professionally planned family safari can be suitable for children when families travel with an experienced guide, stay in carefully selected accommodation and follow wildlife-safety instructions. Children must remain supervised and should never walk around an unfenced lodge or camp without a member of staff.
Families should also speak with a doctor or travel-health specialist before travelling. Malaria precautions, routine vaccinations and destination-specific health advice depend on the countries visited, the child’s age and the final itinerary.
Tanzania is ideal for families wanting the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, followed by a Zanzibar beach stay. Wildlife viewing is exceptional, although some routes involve longer driving distances. Internal flights can reduce travelling time for younger children.
Kenya offers the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Ol Pejeta and family activities around Nairobi. Its safari regions can be connected by road or short flights, and the journey can finish on the Kenyan Coast.
Neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on your children’s ages, travel dates, wildlife interests, available time and preferred pace.
Allow approximately 7–10 days for a comfortable family safari. Families with younger children often enjoy two or three safari areas with longer stays, rather than changing accommodation every night. Families with teenagers may prefer an 8–12 day journey with more parks, activities or a Tanzania and Kenya combination.
If you are adding Zanzibar or the Kenyan Coast, allow another three to five nights. A complete family safari and beach holiday therefore works particularly well over 10–14 days.
Family game drives can normally be divided into shorter morning and afternoon outings of approximately three to four hours, with time at the lodge for meals, swimming or rest. Older children and teenagers may enjoy longer drives or occasional full-day wildlife excursions.
A private safari vehicle provides the greatest flexibility because departure times, rest stops and the length of each drive can be adjusted around your family. Toilet facilities are available at lodges, park gates and designated picnic areas, although they may not always be immediately accessible during a game drive.
Many safari lodges and tented camps offer family suites, interconnecting rooms, triple rooms or additional beds. The available arrangement varies by property, and some camps have age restrictions because they are unfenced or located close to wildlife.
Children’s meals, early dinners and dietary requirements can usually be arranged with advance notice. Swimming pools, childminding and organised children’s activities are available at selected properties but should not be assumed. We recommend accommodation according to your children’s ages, rooming needs and preferred comfort.
As a planning guide, a private mid-range family safari of 7–10 days generally begins from approximately USD 6,000–12,000 for a family of four. Premium lodges, family suites, internal flights and peak-season travel can increase the total considerably.
Children may receive reduced park, accommodation or activity rates, but policies differ according to their ages and the selected properties. Teenagers may be charged adult rates by some parks and lodges. An accurate quotation therefore requires the children’s exact ages, room arrangements, travel month and preferred accommodation level.
Yes. In Tanzania, families can fly from the Serengeti or Arusha to Zanzibar after visiting parks such as Tarangire and Ngorongoro. Zanzibar works well for swimming, family resorts and relaxed beach time after the safari.
In Kenya, a family safari through Amboseli or the Masai Mara can be followed by Diani Beach or another Kenyan Coast stay. Kenya safaris can also connect with Zanzibar through Nairobi.
Three to five beach nights provide a comfortable conclusion, creating a complete family safari and beach holiday of approximately 10–14 days.
