A safari lodge normally uses permanent stone or timber buildings and may offer hotel-style facilities such as a swimming pool, spa or larger restaurant.
A tented camp uses spacious canvas suites and provides a closer connection to the wilderness. These are not ordinary camping tents: most include proper beds, private en-suite bathrooms and hot showers. Both lodges and camps can be Mid-Range, Mid-Luxury or Luxury.

You do not have to choose only one style. Combining a permanent lodge with a tented camp can add variety and allow you to experience different sides of an East African safari.
Neither option is always better. Staying inside or close to a national park can reduce transfer times and provide a more immersive wilderness atmosphere, although rates and concession fees may be higher.
Properties outside the park can offer excellent value, larger grounds and additional facilities, but some safari days may begin earlier. SafariHQ considers your route, budget and priorities before recommending either option.

Yes. Reputable tented camps are professionally managed and designed for safe wilderness stays. Guests receive safety instructions, and many unfenced camps provide escorts after dark because wildlife may move through the surrounding area.
Family tents and interconnecting rooms are available at selected properties, but age policies vary between camps. Share your children’s ages with SafariHQ so we can recommend suitable accommodation.

Most properties we recommend provide private en-suite bathrooms, hot water, lighting and charging facilities. Remote camps often use solar power or generators, so electricity may operate at scheduled times.
Wi-Fi is widely available, but it may be limited to communal areas or slower than at home. We confirm the exact facilities available at each property before booking.

We recommend booking 9 to 12 months in advance for July to October, Christmas and New Year, Great Migration periods, gorilla trekking and popular Zanzibar beach stays.
Small camps, family rooms and premium suites can fill even earlier. Four to six months may be sufficient during quieter seasons, while last-minute trips remain possible when your dates and property choices are flexible.
